Marching Grades

Introductory Grade

Marching for the beginner and an introduction to the disciplines of marching. Introductory Grade is a simplified option retaining the basic skills from the traditional Sport of Marching. Participants build social skills, self esteem, self discipline, co-ordination, appreciation of music and physical fitness. It is a non-competitive grade for entry level marching, and comprises a set technical drill routine and own choice display routine. A team will have 4-10 marchers with a minimum age of 5 years and a maximum age 10 years. The Team has opportunities to march at local Association competitions and events only.

Under 13 Grade

A more skilled level and more disciplined marching grade. It is competitive marching comprising a set format of a technical drill routine and an own choice display routine. Teams can perform either Technical Drill or Display or both. Teams are judged and rewarded with awards - trophies and medals. A Team consists of 7-10 marchers in a Technical Drill Team and 7-14 marchers in a Display Team. A marcher must be a minimum age of 7 years and a maximum age of under 12 years. The Team has opportunities to march at local Association competitions and events and also at Island Championships and NZ Championships

Under 18 Grade

An advanced skill level grade of marching. It is competitive marching comprising a set format of a technical drill routine and an own choice display routine. Teams can perform either Technical Drill or Display or both. Teams are judged and rewarded with awards - trophies and medals. A Team consists of 7-10 marchers in a Technical Drill Team and 7-14 marchers in a Display Team. Marchers must be a minimum age of 12 years and a maximum age of 17 years. The Team has opportunities to march at local Association competitions and events and also at Island Championships and NZ Championships

Senior Grade

More complex skill level required for Senior Grade. It is competitive marching comprising a set format of a technical drill routine and an own choice display routine. Teams can perform either Technical or Display or both. Teams are judged and rewarded with awards - trophies and medals. A Team consists of 7-10 marchers in a Technical Drill Team and 7-14 marchers in a Display Team. A marcher must be a minimum age of 17 years and there is no maximum age. The Team has opportunities to march at local Association competitions and events and also at Island Championships, NZ Championships and International Challenge competitions between New Zealand and Australia.

Masters Grade

Basic skills adapted for masters age marchers. It is competitive marching comprising a set format of a technical drill routine and an own choice display. Teams can perform either Technical Drill or Display or both. A Team consists of 7-10 marchers in a Technical Drill Team and 7-14 marchers in a Display Team. A marcher must be a minimum age of 30 years and there is no maximum age. The Team has opportunities to march at local Association competitions and events and also at Island Championships, NZ Championships, Masters Games and International Challenge competitions between New Zealand and Australia.

Open Free Choice Grade

Social marching for fun and fitness and the entire family. Simple and basic marching skill level. It is non-competitive marching comprising either a free choice routine or to a set format of technical drill routine. Non-competitive therefore not judged, the emphasis is recreational participation and they may interchange marchers at any stage. A Team consists of any number of marchers and marchers must be a minimum age of 4 years and there is no maximum age. The Team has opportunities to march at local competitions and events only.
