History

1930's
  • Early 1930's - 1939 Marching was born in New Zealand during the Depression to keep the nation's young women fit and healthy. Teams emerged from business houses and factories for interhouse competitions.
  • 1939 Members of the forces. Later joined at war's end by returning members of the armed services, were drawn into the sport, restructuring it, based on rigid military style.
1940's
  • 1945 New Zealand Marching and Recreation Association formed. First New Zealand Championships held in Timaru
  • 1946 First Handbook issued. Post-war marching becomes more feminine and technical.
1950's
  • 1952 Blair Athol sea voyage to United Kingdom pioneers international travel.
  • 1953 Grenadier Guards visited and introduced marching in Australia.
  • 1957 Junior Grade first NZ Championship
1960's
  • 1968 Midget Grade first NZ Championship
1970's
  • 1977 First Interdominion Championships Australia / New Zealand held in Wellington.
  • 1978 Lochiel invited to attend Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
  • 1983 Lochiel invited back to attend Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
1980's
  • 1980 Introductory Grade introduced.
  • 1981 Continental Guards / Continental Brass Band win World Championship Quickstep Display in Holland.
  • 1984 Own choice of music introduced, encouraging creative drills and movements enhancing participant and spectator enjoyment. "Marching in Schools" booklet introduced.
  • 1985 Lochiel appointed New Zealand sporting and cultural ambassadors.
  • 1988 Buckingham Guards Senior Team undertook a world tour of 32 countries and gave demonstrations in many countries including a march for the Americas Cup at San Diego, and the Earls Court Military Tattoo.
1990's
  • 1990 Marching officially recognised as a Kiwi Sport. Westlanders Juniors appointed New Zealand sporting and cultural ambassadors to Japan.
  • 1993 Marching given the stamp of approval by NZ Post when illustrated on $1 stamp issued in November 1993.
  • 1995 50th Jubilee of New Zealand Marching association held in conjunction with International Challenge in October at Wellington
  • 1997 Lochiel invited to attend Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
  • 1998 Lochiel invited back to attend Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
  • 1998 Introduction of Competitive, Competitive (with participation emphasis)  and recreational grades.
  • 1998 Name change from NZ Marching Association to Marching NZ
2000's
  • 2000 Lochiel perform at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Wellington
  • 2000 Pioneers of Canterbury attend Brisbane Festival 2000 International Tattoo in Brisbane Australia.
